FFA Dairy Judging Team Article

Gilmer High School FFA Team Wins State Event

The Gilmer High School Junior FFA Dairy Evaluation Team recently won the Junior Division of the State FFA Dairy Cattle Career Development Event. In addition to the junior teams win, Gilmer High’s Senior Dairy Evaluation Team placed 2nd in the Senior Division of the State CDE. The event was held at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA on Saturday, December 6, 2014.

For the event, Junior Team members Megan Bird, Elizabeth Stillwell, Stephanie Bailey, and Brentney Clemmons placed in order of relative merit, a maximum of four classes of dairy cows or heifers. Oral reasons in defense of their placing were given on one of the classes and a Dairy Management exam consisting of 10 multiple choice questions was administered. Brentney Clemmons placed 4th high individual out of 105 students in the state.

Similar to the junior event, Senior Team members Hunter Stillwell, Austin Swinamer, Molly Wright and Denisha Lacy also placed in order of relative merit, a maximum of four classes of dairy cows or heifers. Oral reasons in defense of their placing were given on two of the four classes. Additionally, the senior team participated in a Dairy Management Exercise consisting of 20 multiple-choice questions and a team activity on a dairy farm management scenario. Hunter Stillwell placed 7th high individual out of 88 students in the senior event.

The Dairy Cattle Career Development Event emphasizes skills in dairy cattle selection and dairy herd management and provides experience in the evaluation of dairy cattle type, production records, and dairy herd management. The Dairy Cattle Evaluation CDE is designed to provide a competitive event for agriculture education students, emphasizing skills in dairy cattle evaluation, selection, and dairy herd management.
